The ultimate goal of the MSRE, an experimental thorium molten salt reactor, built by Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1965, was the MSBR, a molten salt breeder reactor, with fuel breeding capabilities. In order to have a breeding function, an advanced mechanism for stable fuel composition by continuous chemical processing of the fuel is required.
In 1985, Kazuo Furukawa designed the "FUJI" Thorium Molten Salt Reactor, which specializes in power generation.
The development of Thorium Molten Salt Reactors should be based on the FUJI concept.
