History of power generation by Th-MSR
R & D on Th-MSR has a long history, although almost all experts of nuclear engineering do not know.
The research on the Thorium Molten-Salt Breeder Reactor (MSBR) which is the ancestor of our reactor started in 1950 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), US. Molten-Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE) was constructed in 1965, and have been driven for 26,000 hours without any accident within four years until 1969. These operations had completed the development of basic technology.
Unfortunately, it was the middle of the Cold War. US government suspended further development in 1976, because Th-MSR uses thorium and does not produce plutonium and was judged as no value from military view point. Then 35 years has passed, and even many nuclear power experts became unfamiliar with this reactor.
Dr. Kazuo Furukawa and his colleagues have internationally continued to study this ideal nuclear reactor for 40 years. He expanded the results of ORNL, and accomplished miniFUJI and FUJI, the basic design of a new Thorium Molten-Salt power plant which is simpler and easier realizable than MSBR which was developed by the Oak Ridge group. This new reactor has already acquired the international recognition.
Times are changing. Clean, safe and low-cost energy is required. To meet the need, we started the new company.
